ADHD Parent Coaching
Support for Parents of Children, Teens, and Young Adults With ADHD
Parenting a child with ADHD can bring challenges that change as they grow. Executive functioning, emotional regulation, motivation, routines, school demands, relationships, and increasing independence can all affect daily life and family relationships.
For some children and young adults, ADHD also overlaps with anxiety, high-masking Autism, and other neuro-developmental differences. Understanding how these factors interact can help parents make better sense of behaviors that may otherwise look like avoidance, defiance, lack of motivation, or an unwillingness to follow through.
ADHD parent coaching provides parents with practical support, education, and strategies for understanding their child's needs and responding in ways that support both their development and the parent-child relationship.
At Anderson Counseling and Wellness, parent coaching is a parent-focused service and does not involve individual therapy or treatment of the child. Drawing on extensive clinical experience with ADHD and neurodevelopmental differences across childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, coaching is collaborative, practical, and neurodiversity-affirming.

A Collaborative and Practical Approach
Parent coaching focuses on understanding what may be happening beneath a challenging behavior, rather than simply trying to stop or correct it.
A child or young adult may know what they are supposed to do but struggle to initiate it, become overwhelmed by demands, have difficulty shifting between tasks, or hold things together in one environment only to become dysregulated at home. For children who mask, what parents see at home may look very different from what teachers, friends, or others see.
Sessions provide an opportunity to make sense of these patterns, identify where things are getting stuck, and develop strategies that are realistic for everyday life.
The goal is not to create a perfectly structured household or expect a child to function in ways that don't fit their neurodevelopmental needs. Instead, coaching helps parents develop expectations, supports, boundaries, and systems that take into account both what their child is capable of and what they can realistically manage in a given situation.
Coaching can also help parents determine when to step in, when to step back, and how to support growing independence without either taking over or expecting skills that are still developing.
Parent Coaching Is Different From Therapy
Parent coaching is provided directly to parents and caregivers. Children and adolescents are not seen individually as part of this service.
Parent coaching is educational, supportive, and strategy-focused. It is not a substitute for individual therapy, family therapy, psychological or neuropsychological testing, autism evaluation, or other mental health treatment when those services are needed.
If concerns arise that would be better addressed through another type of treatment or evaluation, appropriate outside services may be recommended.
