ADHD Parent Coaching
Support for Parents of Children, Teens, and Young Adults With ADHD
Supporting a child with ADHD can be challenging at any age. Difficulties with executive functioning, emotional regulation, organization, motivation, routines, school, increasing independence, or everyday responsibilities can affect the entire family.
ADHD parent coaching provides parents with practical support, education, and strategies to better understand ADHD and respond to challenges in ways that support both their child and their relationship.
At Anderson Counseling and Wellness, parent coaching is a parent-focused service and does not involve individual therapy or treatment of the child. Drawing on extensive clinical experience working with ADHD across childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, coaching helps parents better understand what may be driving difficult patterns and develop practical, neurodiversity-affirming ways to respond.
What ADHD Parent Coaching Can Help With
Parent coaching may address:
Understanding ADHD and executive functioning
Responding to emotional dysregulation and intense emotions
Reducing power struggles and recurring conflict
Creating realistic routines and expectations
Improving organization, planning, and follow-through
Understanding motivation, procrastination, and task initiation
Supporting increasing independence and responsibility
Navigating school concerns and 504 or IEP accommodations
Strengthening communication and connection
Understanding the overlap between ADHD, anxiety, and self-esteem
Adjusting expectations to better match your child's abilities and needs
Developing parenting strategies that are practical for your family
A Collaborative and Practical Approach
Parent coaching focuses on understanding what is happening beneath a challenging behavior rather than simply trying to eliminate it.
Sessions provide an opportunity to look at patterns within the family, identify where things are getting stuck, and develop realistic strategies for everyday situations. The goal is not to create a perfectly structured household or expect a child to function as though they don't have ADHD. Instead, coaching helps parents create expectations, supports, boundaries, and systems that better fit their child's needs while reducing unnecessary conflict.
Coaching can also help parents determine when to step in, when to step back, and how to support growing independence without taking over responsibilities that a child, teen, or young adult is working toward managing on their own.
Parent Coaching Is Different From Therapy
ADHD parent coaching is provided directly to parents and caregivers. Children and adolescents are not seen individually as part of this service.
Parent coaching is educational, supportive, and strategy-focused. It is not a substitute for individual therapy, family therapy, psychological testing, or other mental health treatment when those services are needed.
If concerns arise that would be better addressed through another type of treatment or evaluation, appropriate outside services may be recommended.
