ADHD Assessments for Adults
If you're wondering whether ADHD may be contributing to difficulties with attention, organization, emotional regulation, procrastination, overwhelm, or executive functioning, assessment can be an important part of understanding what you're experiencing and determining an appropriate direction for therapy.
At Anderson Counseling and Wellness, ADHD assessment is offered as part of the clinical intake and treatment-planning process for adults beginning therapy. Assessment is not provided as a stand-alone diagnostic or psychological testing service. The goal is to develop a clearer understanding of your symptoms, history, strengths, and challenges so that treatment can be appropriately individualized.
What the ADHD Assessment Process May Include
Depending on your individual needs, assessment may include:
A comprehensive clinical interview
Review of developmental, educational, occupational, and mental health history
Evaluation of current and historical ADHD symptoms
Assessment of executive functioning challenges
Consideration of anxiety, depression, trauma, autism, and other concerns that may overlap with or resemble ADHD
Standardized ADHD rating scales and clinical measures when appropriate
QB Check testing as an objective measure of attention, impulsivity, and activity
Discussion of findings and individualized treatment recommendations
Assessment is not based on a single questionnaire or test result. Information is considered within the context of your history, current functioning, and other factors that may be contributing to the difficulties you're experiencing.
ADHD Assessment for Adults
Many adults begin exploring ADHD after years of feeling overwhelmed, disorganized, inconsistent, chronically stressed, or frustrated by the amount of effort required to manage everyday responsibilities.
ADHD can also be overlooked when someone has developed effective ways of compensating for their difficulties. This can be particularly relevant for women and adults who have spent years masking symptoms, overpreparing, relying on anxiety to stay organized, or working significantly harder to maintain the appearance that everything is under control.
Assessment can help clarify whether ADHD may be contributing to longstanding patterns and, when appropriate, provide a foundation for treatment focused on executive functioning, emotional regulation, anxiety, relationships, self-understanding, and everyday functioning.
Assessment as Part of Therapy
ADHD assessment at Anderson Counseling and Wellness is completed in the context of establishing an ongoing therapeutic relationship. Stand-alone ADHD evaluations are not offered.
When ADHD is a concern, the assessment process begins before ongoing treatment so that therapy can be informed by a clearer understanding of your symptoms, history, and individual needs.
When a more extensive psychological, neuropsychological, educational, or other specialized evaluation is indicated, referrals to an appropriate provider may be recommended.
