Family Therapy
Helping Families Communicate, Connect, and Navigate Challenges Together
Families face different challenges as children move into adolescence and young adulthood. Changes in independence, expectations, communication, school demands, friendships, and family roles can create stress even in families with strong relationships.
Family therapy can help when families are navigating conflict, communication difficulties, ADHD, anxiety, emotional regulation challenges, parenting concerns, or significant life transitions. Rather than focusing on one person as the problem, family therapy looks at patterns within the family and helps everyone develop healthier and more effective ways of relating to one another.
At Anderson Counseling & Wellness, family therapy is available for families with adolescents ages 12 and older.
When Family Therapy Can Help
Family therapy may be helpful when families are experiencing:
Frequent conflict or tension
Parent-teen communication difficulties
ADHD-related family stress
Anxiety affecting family relationships
Emotional regulation challenges
School avoidance or academic stress
Increasing independence and changing expectations
Divorce or separation
Blended family transitions
Sibling conflict
Caregiver stress or burnout
Major life changes or transitions
A Collaborative, Family Systems Approach
Family therapy recognizes that each person is part of a larger system. Instead of identifying one family member as “the problem,” treatment explores how communication patterns, expectations, stress, and individual needs affect the family as a whole.
Sessions may focus on helping family members:
Communicate more effectively
Reduce recurring conflict
Develop healthier boundaries
Better understand one another’s perspectives
Navigate changing roles and expectations
Strengthen problem-solving skills
Support emotional regulation
Rebuild connection after periods of stress or conflict
ADHD and Family Therapy
ADHD rarely affects only the person who has it. Executive functioning difficulties, emotional regulation, forgetfulness, task initiation, time management, and differences in communication can all contribute to tension within families.
Family therapy can help adolescents and caregivers better understand how ADHD affects everyday interactions while developing realistic expectations and practical strategies for home.
The goal is not simply to improve compliance or behavior. Treatment focuses on reducing unnecessary conflict, improving communication, strengthening relationships, and finding strategies that work for the adolescent and the family.
Parent and Caregiver Collaboration
Parents and caregivers remain important partners in treatment, even as adolescents become increasingly independent.
Depending on the needs of the family, treatment may include:
Family therapy sessions
Parent coaching and consultation
Support around communication and boundaries
ADHD and executive functioning education
Home routines and expectations
Emotional regulation strategies
School collaboration when appropriate
Guidance related to 504 Plans and IEPs
The structure of therapy is individualized based on the needs, goals, and circumstances of each family.
Building Healthier Family Patterns
Family therapy is not about creating a conflict-free family. Disagreements and difficult periods are a normal part of family life, particularly during adolescence.
The goal is to help families communicate more effectively, understand one another more clearly, navigate challenges with less conflict, and develop healthier patterns that continue outside of the therapy room.
